Guided Tour of The Minster in Breisach

0

The Minster in Breisach tour is about more than 800 years of church history and Christian life in Breisach am Rhein; it is also the story of the treasures of Master HL and Martin Schongauer. During our guided tour through the Breisach St. Stephans Minster, we devote ourselves intensively to the construction inside and out.

Today’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedral was mainly built between 1185 and 1230 and expanded again by the end of the 15th century. The church in Breisach is dedicated to Saint Stephen: the arch on the west side above the portal shows the story of the saint, who is considered the first martyr of Christianity. The cathedral’s treasures include an altar carved by Master HL and a mural by Martin Schongauer.

Information about the Minster in Breisach tour

Although the Minster in Breisach is the landmark of the city, it is above all an active place of worship. The parish allows groups of visitors to enter much more generously than most German cities.

However, the cathedral can be closed at short notice for liturgical or cultural reasons, and guided tours may not be possible. We work closely with the parish and the parish office. In very rare exceptional cases, however, it may be necessary to postpone a cathedral tour at short notice. The Breisach Minster tour lasts 60 minutes.

What to Expect

The Breisach Minster tour will inspire you. Our trained tour guides will give you unexpected and exciting insights into this extraordinary building. From the outside as from the inside. Especially interesting:

  • The relics of the two city patrons, Gervasius and Protasius, came to Breisach in 1164. They rest in the 15th-century silver shrine in the sanctuary.
  • The magnificent high altar by the artist HL dates from the early 16th century and is a massive piece of wood carving.
  • The painter Martin Schongauer was born in Colmar and became a citizen of Breisach in 1489. He painted a depiction of the Last Judgment on the west wall of the minster. This is the largest representation of its kind north of the Alps.
  • n addition, the tour guides also tell you the rather unknown anecdotes and scientific findings of St. Stephansmünster.
