Breisach am Rhein – more than 1650 years of History

A guided city tour Breisach will allow you to discover the pearl of the Upper Rhine Valley. Breisach is located about 25 km from Freiburg and in view of the Black Forest and Vosges mountains. It is a small town on the river Rhine, which forms the border between Germany and France. It has more than 1650 years of history. Although Breisach was destroyed several times during its history, it has preserved much of its historic old town. During your tour of Breisach, your professional, English-speaking guide will explore with you not only the Cathedral Hill, but also parts of the modern city.

Breisach – in the heart of the Upper Rhine Valley

These days Breisach is a charming little town. This is in stark contrast to most of its long history. Breisach is located on the “Münsterberg” rock on the banks of the Rhine and has changed hands many times. The Upper Rhine Valley was home to Celts, Romans, Germans and French to name a few. They all left their mark on this small town. On a tour of Breisach, you can learn about its history and discover the main attractions. From the Münsterberg, you can not only enjoy the view of the Vosges, the Kaiserstuhl and the Black Forest, but, led by your own guide, learn and understand what you see.

The highlight of a Guided City Tour Breisach is the Catholic parish church of Breisach, St Stephans Minster. It is the home of the murals of Martin Schongauer, damaged by many wars; the beautifully designed ceiling wall to separate clergy and parishioners is magnificent, as is the 16th-century carved altar.

What to Expect

Professional guides will explore this gem of the Upper Rhine Valley with you. Along the stone steps and paved streets, you go up to the Münsterberg hill, on which the city was founded. Here you will spend most of the tour before descending to the modern market, where the guided tour of Breisach ends. Discover the main attractions of the city:

  • The Stephansmünster is the symbol of the city and of course a highlight of the city tour. Please note: the interior of the Minster is not part of this tour. However, you have the option to visit the interior “on your own”. From the outside, however, the Minster is explained in detail. You are welcome to book a separate tour of the cathedral.
  • Another landmark is the Radbrunnenturm. This fountain was created during the rule of the Zaehringers in the late 12th century. Only by creating this well was the water supply of the citizens simplified.
  • owers and gates as well as fortress walls are still reminiscent of the time when Breisach was the most important military fortress on the Upper Rhine thanks to its strategic location. The Rhine Gate, designed by the great fortress architect Vauban himself, is an impressive example of this.
  • In the Fischerhalde, the former residence of the Breisach Rhine fishermen, you will learn how the straightening of the Rhine by Johan Gottfried Tulla changed the life and work of the Rhine fishermen.
